would you say is most similar to Barnsley in terms of size, crowds, away crowds etc?
Preston or Burnley I’d say
I've always thought Preston as well for some reason. Won a lot more than us historically but most of that was in the 1800s
Yeah, Preston, Burnley, Blackburn
Quite a few clubs of similar or smaller size, or historically lower placed as well, that have benefitted from the money.
Hudders and Burnley both very similar before their success.
I'd agree with Preston, Blackburn and Burnley.
I'd add Bolton to that list, but generally agree with the other suggestions.
Preston. Blackburn, Burnley, Huddersfield, Bradford
Hull before move to new stadium, rotherham were in the 80/90's before their meltdown.
It’s a great question but I’m not sure if there is anyone quite like us.
Playing more games than any others at 2nd tier without winning all that much but persistently punching above our financial weight, a feat that has proved increasingly difficult with the advent of the money means all era.
Not so sure about Rotherham, when we finished runners up to them in 1981 our average crowds almost doubled theirs
Rotherham always been well below our crowds even now when their a division higher
Spot on that. Something like 76 years in the 2nd tier. Lots of clubs would aspire to that.
The money definitely made it harder for us to remain at that level, and you only have to look at the club's we shared it with prior to the prem season. Man City and West Bromwich playing against Grimsby and Swindon! Kids today wouldn't believe it
I think we're in a good place now though. I think the current regime will grow us into a regular championship club again without doing a Reading or a Wigan. Both have had their days in the sun but neither are traditionally 2nd tier clubs.
Apart from the Lancashire lot what about Brighton (before current promotion to the promise land).
Until more recently you could add Oldham, as we always seemed to be playing them in 90's
